How to Let Go of Perfectionism and Learn to Have Fun Again

If you’re the woman who color-codes her to-do list, hits every deadline, and still feels like it’s not quite enough—I see you. High achievers are wired to get it right, and that drive has probably gotten you far in your career, your relationships, and your fitness goals. But somewhere along the way, “doing well” can quietly morph into “must be perfect,” and that’s exhausting in a body-and-mind kind of way.

This is where joyful movement comes in. Unlike performance-driven workouts built around calories, PRs, or aesthetics, joyful movement is exercise for the sheer feeling of it—dancing, hooping, jumping rope, stretching into a tai chi flow—with zero pressure to be “good” at it. And that, it turns out, might be exactly what a perfectionist needs.

Becoming a Beginner Again (On Purpose)

For me, that medicine showed up on a dance floor, in the form of shuffle dance. I walked in as someone used to excelling and walked out realizing I was, officially, bad at something—in public, with people watching. My feet tangled and I tripped. My rhythm was off, and I couldn’t get my dang foot to step down on beat. My inner perfectionist was having a full meltdown at first, if I’m being honest.

But something interesting and beautiful happens when you let yourself be a true beginner… you stop performing and start playing. Psychologists call this a “beginner’s mind”—approaching something with curiosity instead of judgment—and research on accessing a “flow state” suggests that quieting self-evaluation can help us become more present, enjoy ourselves, and learn new skills. Simply put? The less I tried to control every step and “succeed” at this new passion, the better I actually danced.

How Letting Go of Perfectionism Made Me Better, Not Worse

This is the plot twist high achievers don’t expect: loosening your grip doesn’t mean lowering your standards. It means giving yourself enough room to relax and learn. When I stopped white-knuckling every move and let myself mess up mid-song, my body picked up the steps faster than my brain ever could have willed it to.

I learned to KEEP GOING even when I got it “wrong.” I learned that literally nobody even cares if you “get it wrong,” and more importantly, most people wouldn’t even notice. From that place, shuffle dance became something that I did out of compassion, curiosity, and a desire to have a damn-good time… not just trying to “get it right.”

How to Have Fun Moving Your Body Without Trying to Be Good at It

Shuffling is just my personal doorway into joyful movement and all its benefits—yours might look completely different. Jump rope, hula hooping, tai chi, a dance cardio class, a pickup rec league, even wandering hikes with no step goal in sight all count.

The activity matters less than the meaning behind it… moving your body without a scorecard and letting “good enough” (or even “hilariously bad”) be the whole point.

You Don’t Have to Be Good at Something to Enjoy It

Perfectionism thrives in silence and control. It sets strict rules and expectations we MUST fulfill in order to feel worthy. Joyful movement interrupts all of this—it gets you out of your head, into your body, and reminds you that being a beginner isn’t a failure; it’s a doorway to freedom (and, weirdly, mastery).

If you’re a high achiever who’s forgotten how to move just for the fun of it, this is your permission slip.

And if you’re ready to try joyful movement as your grip-loosening practice, shuffle dance might just be your new favorite excuse to feel like a kid again. Grab my free Beginner Shuffler Starter Pack and learn your first steps. (No rhythm or dance experience required, I promise!!)

When’s the last time you allowed yourself to simply MOVE for the fun of it? Regardless of the answer, make time for it this week and watch the perfectionism melt away. — Alex
